The FOCAL Story
Founded in Saint-Étienne, France, in 1979 by engineer and music enthusiast Jacques Mahul, Focal began as a small loudspeaker workshop driven by a clear ambition: to reproduce the artist’s work with exceptional fidelity. Its early innovations in driver and cone design quickly established the company as a leader in French acoustic engineering.
Focal’s reputation reached new heights with the introduction of the Grande Utopia in 1995. This landmark loudspeaker combined ambitious engineering, proprietary technologies and sculptural design, establishing the Utopia name as an international reference in high-end audio. Focal continued to expand its expertise into professional studios, headphones, automotive systems and custom installations.
Today, Focal designs and develops its products in Saint-Étienne while crafting its finest loudspeaker cabinets in Bourbon-Lancy. Its heritage of French manufacturing, rare craftsmanship and continuous acoustic research has earned worldwide recognition, including designation as a French Living Heritage Company and membership in the Comité Colbert.
